If you are thinking of staying in Peschiera del Garda, this is inexpensive, clean and deeply peaceful. {2 star}

Instead of staying in Milan after an overnight flight to Malpensa, we elected to get on the train and head to Peschiera del Garda to have an easy first day in Italy.

The 2-star Hotel Fornaci is clean, quiet and cheap, in a lovely setting on the southern shores of Lago di Garda (a favorite with German tourists). There is a pleasant outdoor bar a few steps away from the hotel and pizzerias within easy walking distance. In sunny late September, we paid 80 euros for a room that slept four that had a view of the lake. A standard Italian breakfast of cereals, pastries, yoghurt, meats, cheeses and fruits included.

Pescheria del Garda is conveniently on the train line that runs from Milan to Vanice, although to get to the Hotel Fornaci, you'll need to take a short taxi ride from the train station. The town is most noted for its proximity to the amusement park "Gardaland" so it would be great location for families planning to visit the park. But it's a plus that Hotel Fornaci is at the other end of town facing a charming fishing marina. It's exquisitely quiet, although a good kilometer's walk (or more) along a lakeside promenade to the center of town and the dock where one can catch the ferries that tour the lake. It's an excellent place for cyclists and those who just want to relax.

The hotel is spotless and the staff is exceptionally friendly and eager to insure you have a happy stay. A lovely retreat in a very charming, low-key, unpretentious corner of Italy.
