This is one of those times I wish there were a "neutral" rating for hotels. The two-star Hotel Herbetet has some good qualities...but also some major issues which would keep us from staying there again, if there were other options available at the time. The best thing about Hotel Herbetet was its location, in Valnontey, a few minutes up the road from Cogne. The view from our room was magnificent. The hotel had a lovely patio to have a drink before dinner and gaze at the mountains and the hotel itself was pretty, full of fresh flowers; friendly and the staff was helpful. Parking is ample and its right across the road from the start of many of the popular hiking trails, and the Gran Paradisia Botanic Garden. Almost all of the hotels in this area, including Hotel Herbetet, require you to purchase a meal plan. And this was one of the issues. The dinner food was one small step above "school-lunch", as my educator-husband put it. Portions were small, bland, and uninspiring. In any other country we might have let this pass, but in Italy...where we go, at least in part, for the wonderful food...we were not happy. In fact, the last night of our three night stay, we opted to go out for dinner in Cogne instead of eat at the hotel. The breakfast was also skimpy...just cold cereals and packaged rolls; by far the least inspiring breakfast of the trip; not really substantial enough for a long hike. The room was simple, plain, on the small side; but adequate, and clean; and the bathroom large (almost as large as the room). But the other issue we had was the hot water--or lack thereof. Most nights there was none, or a mere trickle. I suspect because we were on the third floor, there just wasn't enough pressure for it to make it to the top. The hotel was inexpensive; we paid €110 a night with half-board (for the two of us). This, fortunately, was inexpensive enough so that we felt okay about going elsewhere for dinner on one night. If one were to stay there, I'd suggest trying to get a room on a lower floor and perhaps you would not have the hot water issues we had. And go to dinner in Cogne!
