Nice 4 star hotel in Castello, with a 5-10 minute walk to the Doges Palace, Basilica, etc. Downside is carnival atmosphere outside hotel.

While the Hotel Metropole was quite charming, I don't think I'd stay there again.

For one thing, the price is quite high (appx. $330/night). The room was clean and the bathroom was quite nice with all the amenities. There is a landing right at the hotel for water taxis which came in handy for coming in from the airport.

The interior of the hotel is old style typical Venetian with a fantastic dark red interior lobby and great quirky collections of corkscrews, fans, and religious items (all done a bit tongue in cheek, I think).

It is on the Riva Schiavoni which is like hotel row in the San Marco area (same waterfront street as the Danieli and Londra Palace). When we made the reservation, I thought it would be great to have a view of the water. However, it is so noisy outside the hotel with vendors hawking cheap t-shirts and junky jewelry that we ended up moving our room to the back of the hotel, which had a lovely view of a church.

The Metropole is close to Piazza San Marco if that is important to you. However, after spending some time in Venice, I would prefer to stay in the Dorsoduro area which is busy with great restaraunts and artwork but much less touristy than San Marco. Castello (in which the Hotel Metropole is technically located) is also a terrific area with good restaraunts. We just didn't like being in the heart of such a busy area.

The staff was fairly good and made reservations for us for dinner. A buffet style breakfast is included in the price. We didn't eat at the hotel restaurant for dinner.
