We had two double rooms with balcony for €180 per night. Both rooms were very good size with extremely firm mattresses on the double beds. The bathrooms were fine, but the showers were quite small. The balconies did not have great views and were a little small but they were still nice for sitting out in the morning taking in the view of boats coming and going below. Breakfast was fine and the service was quite friendly. The only complaint I had was that the staff brought their children to work, one of whom was a VERY vocal, often cranky, two-year old. You could sometimes hear her screaming as early as 6:30 a.m. (even with the doors closed and earplugs in.) More than once we were trying to enjoy a glass of wine on the terrace and decided to head down the street and sit somewhere else for a little quiet time. Also, it should be noted that this is towards the top of town so requires walking/climbing. A good thing for your waistline as you eat your way through the great Italian meals, but a tough thing sometimes on the legs. Reviewed by: valerie from NM, review #679 When: April 2003
The Hotel Montemare is located right on the viale Pasitea, so access into the property is very easy; it's right on the road, no hauling luggage up and down the steep pedestrian streets. It is located on the "right" side of the road, so that the street is behind the hotel, leaving the views unimpeded and the traffic noise unnoticeable. It is terraced into the cliff, on three levels. The upper level is the lobby, the large patio with lovely views, and the restaurant (open only during high season). The two floors of rooms are below, about 20 rooms. The hotel was under renovation when we were there; the upper floor of rooms had been completed, the lower floor was still partially under scaffolding and work was progressing. Our room was one of the still-to-be-renovated ones, on the lower level. Our rooms were both quite large and had small balconies opening out over a tiny pedestrian alley and neighborhood below, looking out to the sea. It was clean and comfortable, and baths were decent sized as well. The family was friendly and helpful, making restaurant recommendations we enjoyed immensely, showing us on the map how to navigate the alleys and staircases, and providing a nice breakfast in the morning on the sunny terrace. It is a fairly easy walk into town and down to the beach from here (relatively speaking as Positano is nearly vertical). The intracity bus stops nearby as well ... if you don't want to walk back uphill after dinner! This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
