If you want a 1950's hotel experience, stay at the Hotel Nerva. {3 stars}

The Hotel Nerva is a 3 star hotel near the Colosseum recommended by both Fodor's and Rick Steves.

Positives: good location, near metro stop at Colosseum, quiet, comfortable bed, decent breakfast.

Negatives: dark paneling, dark carpets, dark wallpaper, 25-watt light bulbs, a shower the size of a phone booth or smaller, no wi-fi, uncomfortable pillow, tiny room, narrow hallways, 1950s ambiance.

This hotel appears to have been lost in the space-time continuum somewhere in the 1950s. My room was probably no more than 100 square feet in size including the bathroom which lacked sufficient light for me to apply makeup. I'm pretty sure that if I outstretched my arms, I could touch both walls. There wasn't enough room for me to put my open suitcase on the floor and walk by the bed.

One look and I hot-footed it down to the lobby and told the man at the desk that I would be leaving the next day. Since I was booked for 3 nights, he was reluctant to let me out but I was so eager to leave that I agreed to pay for 2 nights even though I was leaving after one. There was no way on earth that I could have stayed there for 3 nights.

In no sense of the word could anything about this hotel be called charming.

Price was E124/night.
