This is a converted 17th century convent, E168 per night, directly across from Santa Maria delle Grazie. This church contains Leonardo da Vinci's painting "The Last Supper." The rooms are large, by Italian standards, about the same size as a US hotel/motel. Beds are firm, bathroom good sized; room contains a small fridge with items for sale and room to store a bottle of wine and some cheese for late snacks. TV had 1 English channel: CNN international. A balcony opened to the rear of the hotel, overlooking trees and backyards--very quiet at night. Looking at the design of the hotel I think all rooms have balconies. Individually controlled AC was barely adequate. I would have liked 5 degrees cooler, but it was OK. We couldn't leave the balcony door open because of the mosquitoes. The hotel design is a quadrangle with 3 floors. The corridors are marble, about 20 feet wide with with floor to ceiling windows looking out at a grassy quadrangle with a large magnolia tree in the center. It has many meeting rooms for conventions, used by trade associations and the European congress. It contains a restaurant located underground which I never saw. Prices are high, E25 for primi piatti. It was closed Sat and Sun night. The hotel also advertised a "bar" which I never found. With the many excellent places to eat, snack, and drink in the area this is not a problem. Location is perfect. Within a 10 to 30 min walk are: Santa Maria delle Grazie; Cadorna North rail station; Castello Sforza; Science and Technology museum; Duomo; Galleria V. Emmanuel; Teatro La Scala; Pinocoteca Ambrosiana museum. The rail station also has an Alitalia shuttle to MXP. One day we strolled to the train station, took the 0947 to Como del Lago, walked around town and took the 1315 train back in time for lunch at Ricks bar ... easy day. Staff at the desk is "professional" - seemed a little grumpy at times. The night crew is a little more relaxed. There is a computer for use in the lobby for E5 an hour; the staff will log you on to the internet. Taxi to MXP takes about 45 minutes and costs E110. They told me E80 to E85 at the desk. The hotel will reserve a taxi for you; ask them the night before you leave. Reviewed by: Doru from Canada, review #28 When: September 2002
Hotel Palazzo dele Stelline is located on Corso Magenta, in the heart of Milano, in a residential area and right across from Santa Maria Delle Grazie and Leonardo's Last Supper. It is about 100 yards away from the temporary location of the La Scala Museum, very close to Castello Sforzesco, the Church of Sant'Ambrogio, Pinacoteca Ambrosiana and the Leonardo Da Vinci Museum of Science and Technology. The Duomo and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele are within walking distance, as well as the central shopping area of Milano. Being at the end of our trip, we treated ourselves to a junior suite (€182, bed and buffet breakfast included) and received indeed a suite of rooms, with two balconies over the cloister of the former convent of the Stelline. The staff is excellent and the only thing we would criticise was the poor coffee at an otherwise rich and plentiful breakfast. Next time in Milano, we will return to Palazzo delle Stelline without hesitation. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
