Charming and friendly hotel with friendly and helpful staff. I have stayed here twice and enjoyed each stay. {3 stars}

Single room at Hotel Porta San Mamalo, photo by girasoli

Hotel Porta San Mamalo is located on a very quiet street 10 minutes by foot from Piazza Maggiore. The rooms are located in a few buildings. There is a lovely courtyard garden between the lobby and the breakfast room.

I have stayed at this wonderful hotel twice.

My first stay was only for one night. I booked a single room. I was given a huge room, which I suspect might have been a double room. The room was clean and comfortable and the bathroom was clean and modern.

During my second stay the following year, I spent 6 nights at this hotel. I was given a nice single room, again spacious but this time it was not large enough to include a couch. I enjoyed a wonderful view of the rooftops of Bologna. The room was clean, quiet, comfortable, with a modern bathroom.

Both rooms were non-smoking rooms, with TVs, safes, hairdryers, little refrigerators.

The hotel provides a fabulous breakfast including pastries, special cakes, cereal, yogurt, bread, ham, cheese, eggs, bacon, and fresh fruit as well as any type of coffee and I suppose tea you would like. By the third day, the barista started to make my caffè macchiato as soon as I arrived in the morning.

The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. They are very happy to help with reservations, calling a taxi, providing directions, recommendations, etc. There is a computer with free internet access in the lobby available.

I would definitely recommend this hotel. The photo is of the single room I stayed in during my second stay for six nights.

Charming B&B with a great staff. {3 stars}

The best part of our stay in Bologna was Hotel Porta San Mamolo. Located on a very narrow street just inside the ring that encloses the historic area, it is a little tricky to find. However, it's worth the effort once you get there. The staff is friendly and welcoming and they will help you with any request.

We requested a quiet room when we made our reservation. Our room was in a wing with just one other room you reached by a small lift. It was one of the quietest hotel rooms we have ever had. It was small but clean and nicely decorated and the bathroom was clean and modern. There was a television and a refrigerator.

We paid 139E a night and the room was well worth it. The breakfast was wonderful; served every morning in the garden room. There was a barista who took your coffee order and you could get a delicious cappuccino or a selection of tea. The fresh fruit was particularly amazing.

As charming as the building is with its courtyard garden and breakfast room, the staff is the real treasure here. They were uniformly friendly and helpful and they never seemed too busy to make dinner recommendations or reservations for the guests.

If we ever return to Bologna, we wouldn't think of staying anywhere else!
