Welcoming small hotel within easy walking distance to Bergamo's historic center. {3 star}

I really enjoyed staying at Hotel Il Gourmet in Bergamo. It's just outside the centro storico in the upper city, so one can drive to it and park there. I understand that the other two hotels in Città Alta require parking elsewhere after luggages has been dropped off.

The Hotel is on the San Vigilio hill; my room had a fabulous view overlooking the upper city of Bergamo and the Lombardy plain. Rooms are furnished in what I'd call simple, Scandinavian-design style. Small TV, mini-fridge, decent size bathroom with enclosed shower.

The attached restaurant was very good, with excellent food and service. My dinner was the equivalent of US$30, and included a shrimp salad, delicious ravioli dish, wine, dessert and coffee.

One comment about getting to Bergamo via train: It's much easier to get there and back from Milan than it is coming from Venice. It's less than an hour via train from Milan, which makes it a good place to stay and recouperate upon arrival in Italy.

I also stayed at the hotel on my last night in Italy, prior to flying out from Malpensa (Milan). I took the train to Bergamo from Venice, which was a slow "milk run" train, with multiple stops and a change of trains in Brescia. Not the best way to spend an afternoon! It probably would have been faster to take the Eurostar to Milan and then backtracked a bit to Bergamo. Next time ...
