Aventino e Testaccio: Hotel S. Anselmo

Newly refurbished 4* in quiet, leafy Aventine Hill neighborhood.

We have been staying at these hotels for the past 6 years. The group owns four; three of which are next to each other on the Aventine Hill in the Testaccio neighborhood of Rome: Hotel S. Anselmo (the one we stayed at), Hotel Villa San Pio and Hotel Aventino.

S. Anselmo used to be the cheaper of the three, and we loved staying there for the location: away from the tourist crowds, near a great neighborhood full of Italian families and their children (Testaccio), a quiet, leafy street, and near a great breakfast place (Pasticceria Linari) and a metro stop (Piramide).

We stayed in S. Pio last year and found it to be a little cheap in its recent renovations (see review), though not enough for us to not want to return to this quiet oasis. When we made a last-minute change to our itinerary, and S. Anselmo had a room available (the only 4* of this group), we decided to take it anyway, since it was only for the last night of the trip, though for 270 E.

I couldn't have been more pleased with the restoration - better quality job than at the H. S. Pio. The usual great, friendly and professional staff, a beautiful garden area, excellent breakfast as usual. The room had a great bathroom with 2 sinks and a large and oddly-shaped tub/shower combo. The decor is nouveau gothic-modern (I just made that up - it was a little frou-frou but with contemporary touches). I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again, though we could have gotten a better deal if we'd booked earlier through an Italian site as we've done in the past.
