We pondered the age old question of on your last night in Rome to stay at the airport or to stay in the City itself. Since we were taking the train back into Rome on our last night from Montepulciano, that was easy. I found a positive review of Hotel Sileo here on SlowTrav that advertised one block from the Termini and then I made reservations. When we walked out of the Station, I thought "Oh, what I did I get myself into," since the area around the station is sleazy. Hotel Sileo is literally one block away as you walk out of the station. It's on a side street and on the fifth floor. It caters to the conductors that use it to sleep during the day, so check in is after 7 pm. There are other Hotels on the different floors that I think do the same. We arrived about 4 pm to drop off our bags, but the host said a room was available. We had to laugh because she asked us if we found them through Rick Steves, I said no, but knew of him - that was the 2nd time of our trip were were asked that. The room was clean and comfortable. The windows faced into a back ally and there was restaurant kitchen noise, but when we closed the windows, it was quiet. We paid E70, with a private bathroom, and it was well worth it. The host made our arrangements for pick up to the airport for the next morning, which was E35. I am sorry I didn't ask for a restaurant recommendation as all of the restaurants we saw around there catered to Tourists, with the signs out front advertising American dinner - so our last dinner was just so so. We would stay here again if we needed to be by the train station for a night. Reviewed by: Fur Kids Mom from NY, review #1814 When: June 2006
We read about Hotel Sileo in Rick Steves literature. The hotel rents rooms out during the day to train engineers, who check-out late afternoon. Travelers, like us, can check in after they leave, but then must be ready to check-out by 9:00 am. We only needed a nice, inexpensive room to stay in the night before we left Italy. We could not have made a better choice. It is within easy walking distance to the main train station, Termini. Although the hotel is on the 5th floor (in Italy, this is the 4th floor), there is an elevator to take you and your baggage up. The family who owns the hotel is prompt in responding to e-mail, exceedingly courteous, and keeps a very attractive and clean hotel. The price for the night is well under 100 euros. The money we saved with this inexpensive room helped pay for the taxi to the airport very, very early the next morning. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
