Tremezzo: Hotel Villa Marie

Stay here only if you are tolerant of noise.

We decided to stay at Lake Como on our way to Ortesei, as we arrived at Malpensa late afternoon and thought we'd be better off saving the longer part of the drive to the next morning.

We had tried, unsuccessfully, to reserve a room in Cernobbio. We'd seen Hotel Villa Marie on the web and, even though the information was scanty, decided to stay there, in Tremezzo, rather than Como. This was an error.

The drive is long, on one of Italy's famous twisty narrow mountain roads. We thought Bellagio would be too far, but Tremezzo was about the same distance.

The hotel is right on the main road. We had reserved a lake view room, which meant that our windows were also right on the main road. There was constant traffic and lots of noise. Unfortunately for us, it had been pouring and continued to do so; if there was a lake we never saw it.

The hotel is old but nicely appointed. The skeleton key was very tricky and we had difficulty locking and, especially, unlocking the door to our room. As in many Italian hotels the lighting was bad. There was no way to regulate the temperature and the heat was on. If we opened the windows we got the road noise; if we closed them, we were too warm.

The hotel door is locked at midnight, as is the gate to the parking area. We knew about the front door, but did not learn about the gate until we were in front of its padlock at 6:30 AM as we tried to leave. We finally found a night number for the owner who grudgingly got up and unlocked the gate so we could get out.

The room cost was €110 including breakfast - which, since it was not served until 8, we did not have.
