Near Barga. ... Nature: 5 stars. Hotel: Over-rated

Gorgeously located in the mountains about 7 kilometers from lovely Barga, this conference center should have everything going for it. Unfortunately, it has very little interest in the individual traveler and is geared for conferences: impersonal and unhelpful. If you want to hike in the Appenines it is a good base for the hills of Italy.

The rooms and the food are acceptable, the view is grand, but the charm is noticeably absent. You can get good rates as an individual traveler when the conferences haven't filled it: $94.00 a night (Expedia rate), including breakfast, swimming pool and air conditioning.

Note: Other folks who were at Il Ciocco told me they were paying 112 euros for the same rooms. They had negotiated directly with Il Ciocco for rates considerably lower than the hotel's published rates. Suggests you need to "shop" for this hotel and can definitely find bargains.
