B & B with Heart and Soul

I wrestled with my conscious as to whether to write a review of La Zuppa Inglese B & B. If I were to expose this newly opened gem of a B & B to the world, would I find myself, the next time I was in need of a peaceful country retreat, finding no room at the Inn? Should I keep this treasure to myself? Fortunately for those of you who will have the pleasure of staying here, the goodness and generosity of my spirit won the argument. You can send your thank you gifts and cards to my Post Office Box.

La Zuppa Inglese sits on the mountainside in the green of Parco di Subasio (Mount Subasio Park) about a 10 minute drive from Assisi.

Laura and Alessandro are the owners of this lovely accommodation. Alessandro speaks excellent English and communication to set up the reservation – including my many questions – were handled quickly and efficiently. I was already looking forward to my stay and I hadn’t even paid the deposit.

Laura and Alessandro have remodeled this country house with fine attention to detail. Laura's artistic touch can be seen everywhere - the rustic, weathered doors which are used inside the rooms; the iron hooks which hold the enormous bath towels; the polished wood floors; high quality bed linen, huge pillows and eggplant and lavender accents bring a feeling of charming sophistication.

What a pleasure to wake to a breakfast of Laura’s moist, rich apple and cinnamon cake; fruit crostata (a jam fruit tart); large bowls of fresh fruits; crepes; granola; prosciutto and cheeses with local breads set on the terrace under the leafy branches of the oak tree, sitting on the purple cushioned iron chairs while sipping some of the most amazing tasting coffee served with pitchers of steamed milk. You can’t help but smile while watching the resident kittens romping through the herb and vegetable garden.

Purple gem-colored eggplants hang from their stems next to brilliant red tomatoes - a luscious back drop for the fresh herb plants of Sage, Lavender and Chives – all seemingly purposefully planted to accent the chosen color scheme of the B & B.

Laura, an excellent chef, can provide home cooked meals on request. For me, someone who has an unconventional schedule, it was a true joy to have my breakfast served when I wanted it versus when it was opportune for the B & B. Internet and cell phone use is sketchy - from inside the rooms, nearly nonexistent. Perhaps this is the universe suggesting you turn off the electronics and allow the sounds and hum of the countryside to provide your entertainment - the symphony of chirping crickets; the braying of a donkey on a far away hillside; acorns dropping to the Earth; the soft rustle of the leaves melding with the sounds of running water in the nearby creek; the purr of the baby kittens - to take the time to view the glow of the stars appearing in the peaceful blackness of the night sky and to experience the amazement of seeing a fox trot across the patio stone with a look that clearly states you are the visitor not he.

The Ginestra bushes stand outside the fence boarder, apparitional against the night sky, must, during their blooming in late May - June envelope the terrace in perfume. A note: Internet access is easily found in the office/reception area of the house and the terrace allows you make to make cell phone calls...

Healing sulfur waters flow in the room’s showers from the thermal springs on the property. Carafes of fresh water are provided in the rooms for drinking and brushing your teeth. Though the sulfur smell was a bit disconcerting at first, the softness of my hair and skin was a lovely benefit.

Be sure to take a short, easy 50 m. walk to the River Tescio waterfall and pond which is fed by the thermal springs, to take a dip.

Once I arrived at La Zuppa Inglese, I had no interest in leaving. The hearts of Laura and Alessandro can be strongly felt in every aspect of this lovely B & B – welcoming and comforting their guests – and offering a special stay for those who have the privilege of their hospitality.
