Jewel of a B&B, with a delightful owner.

In July of 2005, I took my 3 daughters and 3 daughters-in-law to Florence. We stayed at Le Stanze di Santa Croce and all of us have yearned to return ever since. This little B&B has 4 guest rooms, a tiny little kitchen, and a lovely terrace where breakfast is served. What we had not realized before we arrived was that it would be our own little house.

Le Stanze is only two blocks off the piazza. At one end of the street (Pinzochere) is Santa Croce Cathedral and at the other is Michaelangelo's house.

Mariangela is the owner and a week before we arrived she emailed me the access code to the front door. We arrived, let ourselves in, read her notes of welcome on the entry table, picked up our room keys and made ourselves at home. Since there were 7 of us and only 4 guest rooms - the place was ours.

Mariangela does not live there. She comes in in the mornings to make breakfast then returns in the afternoon to make sure everyone is happy. She is a marvelous cook and one day (after giving us a tour of the local market and showing us how to pick out the very best of the produce) she gave 3 of my girls a cooking lesson. The rest of us were extremely happy with the results.

In the evenings after our adventures, we sat on the terrace and ate cheese and bread, and opened a bottle of wine (well, maybe more than a bottle) and talked about our day. The charm of this little B&B was intoxicating and the privacy it afforded us was luxurious.

If you're looking for personal sttention from your host, if you're looking for a great location, if you're looking for Italian charm, you'll find it a Le Stanze. I am returning in October - this time with my sister - and can't wait to get back.
