This is a lovely well hotel built right into the sassi in Matera. Although it's in the old part of the city, the hotel has a modern interior and an elevator. {3 stars}

The Locanda di San Martino is a very comfortable 3-star hotel right down in the sassi of Matera, the part that you want to tour. My room was large and comfortable, with a desk, a flat-panel TV, free internet, etc. The bathroom was large too, and I even had a tub.

As the hotel is built right into the sassi, the entry to each room is from the outside, so you have a great view of the sassi, and a "balcony" at which to sit and read while enjoying the view. The breakfast room is downstairs, and the variety is about typical ---- good, but not out of the ordinary.

Front desk is staffed by very helpful people, and they will take care of your car for you at nominal cost.
