Cannaregio: Locanda Leon Bianco

Corte Leon Bianco, Phone: 041.5233572

Grand Canal hotel with great view and reasonable prices. Highly recommended - if you can climb the stairs. I'd stay there again. {3 stars}

First, be sure to take the address with you because when you step into the tiny Corte Leon Bianco, you'll have trouble spotting the hotel. There's no big sign announcing it.

After you're buzzed in, you have to climb three flights of concrete stairs. But, we found it's worth the climb. The hotel is tiny, with maybe a half dozen rooms.

Be sure to reserve a double room with a Grand Canal view (130 to 250, depending on the season). There's no breakfast room. When you check in, you're asked what time you'd like breakfast and it's brought to your room. It's the standard continental breakfast: coffee, juice, rolls and we found it to be perfectly adequate when supplemented by some fruit from the Rialto market.

The room was very large and clean, but the old palazzo has settled a bit so the room was a bit crooked! The bathroom was excellent.

The woman at the reception desk, who also doubled as the room service person, was friendly and funny. She was also helpful at recommending restaurants, etc. She also took us around and showed us some of the other rooms, including one with a huge mural on the wall behind the bed. (Check out the photos on the hotel's website.)

The location is fantastic, just off the Strada Nuova. Beware: this is a basic, clean, great location hotel. But it is what I'd call minimilist. If you're looking for luxury and a lot of extras, stay someplace else.
