San Marco: Locanda Novecento

Wonderful small hotel in picturesque area.

This was a great hotel - very small (only 9 rooms) owned by relatives of the Hotel Flora, which is frequently recommended. In fact, when I asked for a "good sized" room from the Flora, they very honestly advised that they had only a tiny room, and recommended their relatives' hotel.

It is on a narrow side street, a short but scenic 10 minute walk to Piazza San Marco, up and down little bridges, over very pretty canals and past tons of wonderful stores. Is was very convenient for site-seeing, and we felt very safe walking in the neighbourhood late at night.

The hotel feel is intimate, and sort of "clubby", with a nice sitting room, an honour bar, and a great buffet style breakfast, with cereal, eggs, toast, croissants, fruit, cheese and meat.

Venice is not cheap. The room was 230 per night, for a king size bed (Italian style: 2 twin beds on a large boxspring), and a well appointed bathroom, but it was quiet, very peaceful, had a nice outdoor courtyard for breakfast, and the staff was very attentive - more or less insisting that we had dinner reservations, and very happy to recommend them.

Some of their recommendations were a bit odd - we walked through deserted alleys far away one night, for a so-so meal, but others were fantastic, including a fish restaurant in the market which was the best of our 2 week Italian vacation.

Take a private water taxi (vs. the much cheaper Alilaguna) to the hotel - you will be let out a few doors from the hotel and honestly, I don't know how you would EVER find it on your own. Also, if you, like us, arrive jet-lagged from an overnight cross-Atlantic flight, you will be in no mood to navigate Venice with your luggage, even if it is on wheels. The private water taxi costs a fortune - 90 for 2, but honestly, its worth it to not be one on those hopeless souls lugging suitcases up and down the stairs and cobblestone paths.
