The Palace Hotel alone is reason enough to visit Diano Marina. Ambience, service and food are all terrific. {3 stars}

The stately, yet charming golden yellow hotel is just past the promenade, so it is right on the water. Our corner room was lovely. You entered a foyer with a wardrobe on the left. Straight ahead was a large bath with a tub and shower. To the right there was a large bedroom with a loveseat, dresser and a small table with two chairs. The floors were pink and coral terrazzo. The walls were coral as well. The loveseat was a medium blue and the bed was covered with a beige and blue damask duvet. As a corner room it had big windows on two sides and a glass door.

Best of all, was the private balcony that overlooked the sea. We spent the first afternoon on the balcony watching sailboats; huge monohulls, a large catamaran, and some small sailboats that were racing. On other days we were mesmerized by the kite surfers who zoomed by like jets.

Food at the hotel was far better than the usual hotel fare when you have half-board. For breakfast there were several cereals, meats, cheeses, rolls, yogurt and fruit. We chose our dinner menus at breakfast. Dinners consisted of antipasti, primo, secondo, dolce, and salata. The menus were varied with entrees such as veal shanks braised in a wine sauce and served with zucchini and peppers, veal chops with pepper sauce, fried calamari, baked fish, and shrimp. Typical antipasti were vitello tonnato and crepes with Béchamel sauce, both excellent. The food was always good, and the service was outstanding. The owner, along with two waiters made everything run like a well-oiled machine.

Loris and Elisabeth Scalambrin owners and operators of the Palace Hotel speak excellent English and they were wonderful to us throughout our stay. Everything we asked for was provided immediately. They've owned the hotel for 17 years and they're very knowledgeable about the area.

The price for two people with half-board was a very reasonable €116 for this three star hotel.

Certainly, Diano Marina is more like a resort town than many of the towns and villages on the coast of Liguria and I can see that it might be overrun with tourists in the summer, but in October it was wonderful. The promenade is a great place to walk and we really enjoyed nibbling on French fries at a small caffe on the pedestrian street as we watched the people go by. There are lots of families: kids in strollers, on tricycles, roller blades, older women arm in arm and one old woman in a wheelchair enjoying the late afternoon sun as she was pushed along by her companion.

Diano Marina is well located for day trips to Cervo, Dolceaqua, Ventimiglia, San Remo, and even Monaco and Nice. We'll definitely return to stay at the Palace.
