Great little hotel with terrific views and balconies. {3 stars}

We spent two nights in Muggia on our way from Venice to Rovinj in Istria. Originally I had researched hotels in Trieste, but found a few reviews from fellow travelers who had chosen to stay in the small fishing village of Muggia instead and take the ferry for the short ride across the bay to the center of Trieste. This not only sounded like more fun, but an easier access with our rental car and the parking was free.

It was a great choice. We loved the small village of Muggia and the hotel. The hotel was relatively new and situated on a hillside with a bay and sea view. We had a lovely balcony high in the tree tops that was perfect for enjoying a glass of wine and the extraordinary view. The rooms and baths were very modern and spotlessly clean with a great air conditioning system.

The hotel was easy to find from the highway and had ample free parking. It was a short walk into the village center with its picturesque historical center and harbor. There were a few restaurants, bars, and gelato cafes within walking distance.

A word of warning...the walk down is only about five to ten minutes, but it is steep and quite a climb getting back up to the hotel. There is usually ample parking in town if you decide to drive down. The cost of our sea view room was E110.

The breakfast room was very nice and the breakfasts were good and plentiful, serving the usual, cereal, yogurt, rolls, croissants, meats and cheese, but all were of high quality. One tradition there that I hadn't seen in Italy before were the envelopes that were on our table each morning with our room numbers written on them, ours was empty the first morning, but the second morning they contained our folded napkin from the previous day. An interesting idea and a new one to us.

The owners of the hotel and the people on duty were all friendly, helpful, and went out of their way to make our stay pleasant. We were fond of the resident dog and cat that welcomed us as we left and returned each day.

Our experience there was very enjoyable, including the short ferry ride to Trieste. The ferry runs often between the two towns and the fare is paid on board. We found Trieste to be an attractive, interesting city and had a great day exploring the town center.
