After a long drive from Palermo, my husband and I parked the car in front of the hotel and entered the jasmine-scented courtyard. The lobby is filled with beautiful antiques, with a pretty ceramic tiled floor. An attendant appeared to take our car to the hotel's private parking lot. The manager showed us to our room which was in the old, convent wing. Although not large, it was spacious enough and decorated in an elegant and tasteful manner. The bathroom was modern and full of gorgeous hand-painted tiles. Our view looked over the gardens and out to the Straits of Messina. A welcome basket of fruit and bottle of chilled prosecco was on the table. The pool is in the gardens and has a breathtaking view of the Straits and also of Mt. Etna. Having a pool was almost a necessity during our stay when the temperatures were 40 degrees Celsius (over 100F) everyday. Breakfast is served on a flower-filled terrace overlooking the Straits. A lavish buffet of every possible breakfast food is laid out in the adjoining refectory. The dining room is a very popular spot for a special dinner or event and reservations are mandatory. The entire staff at the San Domenico Palace is professional, friendly and extremely willing help with any matter, big or small. The location of the hotel, on a quiet, tree-lined piazza just off the Corso, is ideal. We enjoyed our stay immensely and were reluctant to leave, even with the delights of Positano and Le Sirenuse awaiting us.
