When: February-March 2008

This is a good value four star hotel located within easy walking distance of the historic center of Perugia.

The hotel more closely resembles a U.S. hotel in service and size of room and appointments. This is not necessarily a bad thing.

Our room had twin beds in a large (for Italy) room that looked out over the streets of Perugia and the walkway leading to the escalators in the fortress that deposited one in the old town at the Piazza Italia. The walk/ride to the center is only about a 10 minute stroll.

The bathroom is "spacious" with a shower over the tub that was more than sufficient. The hotel has an elevator and a restaurant that we did not try. However, the included breakfast was a very good buffet which featured cold meats, cheese, fruit, cereal, etc., and cappuccino.

The hotel is also located adjacent to and over a parking garage which makes it especially convenient for walking to the historic center while at the same time having easy access to a car for touring the countryside of Umbria.

The rate for a twin room which included breakfast was 90 euros per night. I noted that there was not a parking fee charge on our bill but maybe we paid cash? Our stay in the Sangallo Palace was sandwiched between apartments for a week each in Bologna and Rome and the service and convenience worked well for us. Would definitely stay there again.

If you canít stay right in the historical center, this is the very next best thing. Overall, a comfortable, modern hotel. {4 stars}

The Sangallo isn't right in the historic center but itís an easy 5 minutes up to the center via the only public escalators youíll ever see that go through an underground fortress.

The location might seem a bit off-putting at first ... it's near the bus terminal in a non-quaint section, but it is so close to the center of Perugia that you hardly notice. In return, you get a big room and modern accommodations. The room was really large, even by American hotel standards. (Only complaint was the shower that got the bathroom floor wet because itís not fully enclosed.)

The desk staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Given that the hotel has a bit of a "business hotel" look to it, it was even more surprising and welcome to find such a nice and helpful staff.

The indoor pool is small and while not the most enticing, it was perfectly fine. You have to use your own towel from the room or pay Ä2 for an extra towel. Internet access (in-room with an adsl cord) is Ä4 an hour, with a deal for 24 continuous hours of access. Parking is also extra and the lot is very small. There is cheap public parking very nearby if the hotel lot is full.

Overall, a good place to stay with very comfortable rooms. Not the atmosphere of a cozy, small hotel but an excellent choice because of the location and big rooms.
