An Exemplary Bed and Breakfast
This is somewhere quite special ... it was our first taste of Italian B and B and we were made to feel most welcome.
Villa della Pergola is perched high above the seaside resort of Alassio with good views along the coast.
We were met and welcomed by Marcella upon arrival who has lived in this former home of Sir Daniel Hanbury for 20 years.
Our room was lovely, not ritzy or glitzy but large with lovely linens and an area of verandah for our own private use. It was furnished with some good antique furniture including our bed which was very comfortable. Our private bathroom was not ensuite but was of a very good standard with lots of hot water and good soft towels.
We enjoyed a marvellous breakfast on the verandah with freshly squeezed orange juice, excellent coffee, pastries, yoghurt, fruit, and the most delicious home made cakes.
We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the park that the villa is set in. Traces remain of its original form and it is slowly being brought back to life by the devoted owners. It is possible to walk down to the sea and town of Alassio but this is perhaps better suited to the energetic as it is a steep walk back.
There are 2 rooms and one family suite in the main Villa and a further 6 in Villina della Pergolina which is slightly higher up so the views are even better. All the rooms in Pergolina are ensuite, some have private though not adjacent terraces or balconies and all have been refurbished this year so everything is of a high standard.
On Saturday evening Marcella hosted a drinks party for all her residents and it was a great thrill to walk down the splendid marble staircase at dusk as all the lights were coming on along the coast to the sound of tinkling fountains.
Marcella is a natural hostess so there is no need to fear a stuffy atmosphere, everything was informal and relaxed and children are made to fell very welcome.
Prices are around 180 euros for a double; very little more for a family suite and for those who love history, gardens or architecture this represents very good value for money. There is lots to see and do in this area apart from the seaside, and Villa della Pergola would make an excellent base for a weekend break at almost any time of year. One family we spoke to were on their second vist that year as the children loved the warm sea and golden sand of Alassio so much and they themselves the warm hospitality of V d P that they couldn't wait to go back.
