When: August 2004

A beautiful retreat with wonderful views of Florence. {5 stars}

Villa La Vedetta is beautifully located just off Piazzale Michelangelo.

We were warmly welcomed and shown up to our room on the top floor. We had been upgraded to a suite so it was a pleasant surprise to be shown into a lovely sitting area with a desk, tv screen and complimentary internet access, a 2 seater sofa and a remarkably fashionable chair! Our bedroom was simply beautiful with a huge bed, wonderful, modern lighting and the most luxurious fabrics. We had partial views across Florence from the five windows!

The bathroom was state of the art, too, with an enormous jacuzzi bath, a good shower, excellent lighting, and an abundance of hot water and towels. The walk-in wardrobe was carefully thought out. We slept soundly on the silk and linen sheets with goose down pillows and our room was very quiet. A real haven from the rigours of Florence.

Breakfast was disappointing; served in a conservatory type room that had been built on to the original villa. The only good thing about it was wonderful coffee.

The public rooms were beautiful and the library particularly so as it had views out, as well as comfortable furniture and a good selection of books in several languages.

The heated swimming pool and big terraces were super with an attractive garden running all round.

Maybe it was the August factor but somehow this hotel was lacking something. It had none of the "feel good" factor for us that we felt when we arrived at Palazzo Sasso or Il Falconiere, for example.

The hotel appperared short staffed but at the rate we paid (225 per room per night) it seems churlish to complain. The rack rate for our room is a staggering 1500 per night!! They certainly can't hope to achieve that with the staffing levels we experienced, but as it is only 18 months old perhaps it needs time to settle down.

There are only 18 rooms spread across 2 buildings and 4 grades of comfort, Romantic, small but nice, GrandDeluxe, slightly bigger and some with a view of the Duomo, Deluxe Suite, our category and Bella Vista. The latter is a huge duplex with a picture window straight onto the Duomo, exquisite with a rack rate of 2000 euros !!!

Rates change frequently so check out the online booking system for a 5* bargain like ours!! The restaurant was in a fabulous room but unfortunately we couldn't eat there as it wasn't properly open due to Ferragosto.

The hotel operates a free shuttle service into Florence or you can walk if you are energetic. It is only a few minutes' walk to San Miniato Al Monte with lovely walks all round. Free parking in the hotel grounds is a real asset. Lovely.
