Anacapri: Villa Mimosa

We stayed at Villa Mimosa for 3 nights (August 1, 2 and 3) and were very disappointed at several things.

Firstly, I had made a phone call to our host to make aa reservation on May 26 and he asked me to fax my request and credit card information because his English was very bad (more on that later). On June 2, I emailed the information. After not receiving any kind of confirmation from him, I emailed at least twice asking if he had received my fax and when I finally got a response it was “regular your reservation. Many thanks” (those were the exact words). I interpreted the “many thanks” to mean yes, he received my fax. Oh, before I forget, I asked him at least twice if we could pay by credit card when we checked out and never got an answer.

So two weeks before we were to fly to Rome, I contacted him by email just to confirm, again (I’m a little anal that way) and it's a good thing I did. No response. I had a friend, who speaks and writes Italian translate my email and I resent it the next day (Jul 11) and again asked about paying with a credit card. This went on for 5 days.

On July 15 he emailed and said he was waiting for my credit card information to secure the room!!! I just about flipped and had my sister who lives in Italy phone him. He told her that my fax had been “filed away” (whatever that meant) and to resend it! So I did and he responded that he had received it. Fine, but between this point and the date of our arrival, I was thinking the worst.

August 1, we arrived and were greeted by our host (he wasn’t the friendliest person) and showed us to our room.

Sure it’s a nice room, brand new, very clean and it smelled nice but it was a little warm. I asked about the air-conditioning and was told that it would be an extra 5E per day. Our "terrace" consisted of an area about 5x5 with 2 chairs and a small table. It was surrounded by plants and directly on the other side was the main office. No privacy whatsoever. Ok we could live with it.

We went out for a few hours and when we returned, the room was stifling hot. Now I’m really mad so I grab his initial email to me that said “The rooms are endowed with conditioned air, TV sat, safe box...” (exact words) and went marching into the office. I told him I was not happy about not being told that the AC would cost extra and showed him the email. I told him I wasn’t paying anything extra so he said he wouldn’t charge us for the air conditioning for the first night and if we liked, we could move to another room that was “closer to the sea”. It would be available to view at 10 the next morning.

What the website doesn’t mention or show is the 2 rooms below, which are small apartments with a kitchenette, each with a grassed area like a backyard, with lawn chairs and an umbrella. They are not as pretty as the rooms shown on the website. I would call them “rustic” and nothing fancy or frilly. You can see the sea, but you’d have to stand at the back of the yard to see it. This B&B is not that close to the water. It seemed a little cooler and breezier so we decided to move.

We went out for the day and again when we came back, the room was very hot (and a little smelly). We slept with the windows opened for the next 2 nights. (Oh, back to when I spoke to our host on the phone and he said his English wasn’t very good. That was another fib: There was absolutely nothing wrong with his English - I understood every word he said perfectly.)

The website states: “The bedrooms, with fabulous views of the sea and large sunny terraces, all have air conditioning, satellite television, and hair dryer”. I don’t know about any of the other new rooms but the terrace we originally had was by no means large!

Regarding payment by credit card: When we checked in, I saw a notice on the desk that said payment had to be made in cash. I asked about this and our host told us that the banks were charging too much for credit card transactions (that’s not MY problem).

Although we enjoyed our time in Anacapri, I would never recommend Villa Mimosa to anyone. I found the host to be very aloof, like he couldn’t have cared less. Actually, one morning we were having breakfast and he walked right by us, twice, and completely ignored us.

The self-serve breakfast was decent enough and the newer part of the B&B is very nice. But the way our host treated us, the lack of communication, and air-conditioning issues left a really bad taste in our mouths. We were charged 110E per night.
