The word for 100 is cento. To form the words for 200, 300 and so on up to 900, simply combine the required number for 2 to 9 with the ending cento (note: the result is written as one word). The list is straightforward with no exceptions. The word for 1,000 is mille. Multiples of 100 up to 1,000
* Note: cento means "one hundred" and "mille" means "one thousand"; you don't add "one" before these as in English. For numbers from 100 through 999, use the word for the appropriate number of hundreds followed by the correct number between one and ninety-nine. Drop the final "o" of "cento" if followed by "otto" or "ottanta". Note that unlike with numbers in the twenties through nineties, you do not drop the final "o" of "cento" when followed by "uno" (or "undici"). Again, the resulting combination is written as a single word. For higher numbers, the words get long, but you can figure them out by breaking out the parts. You have now covered the numbers in Italian up to 1,000!You learned the numbers from 1 to 100 in previous lessons. To practice with numbers from 100 to 999, pick an entry from each of the first two columns below, then pick either an entry from the third column (endings up to 19) or an entry from each of the fourth and fifth column (endings from 20 through 99) and combine them into a single word. Sometimes you will pick a blank entry from one or more columns; e.g. centotrentadue (132), cinquecento (500), seicentottanta (680).
* The "o" ending of cento is dropped if followed by "otto" (eight) or "ottanta". Remember also that endings of numbers in the "tens" column are dropped if followed by "uno" or "otto". ** Tré is written with an accent when it is combined in this way.
