La Rocca, center of Umbertide, 4, p. Caduti del Lavoro, across from the fortress in the center of town. Features an extensive seafood menu. Open for lunch from 12:30 until 2:15 and for dinner from 7:30 until 10:15. Closed Mondays. 075-941-1828

Ristorante - Albergo Capponi, 19, Piazza XXV Aprile, center of Umbertide. Offers a simple, local multi-course menu. Open for lunch from 12:30 until 3, and for dinner from 7:30 until 10:00. Closed Mondays. 075-941-3256

CaReMa, on v. behind the COOP shopping center. A no-frills family restaurant where the food is excellent and portions generous and reasonably priced. Offers pizzas in the evening. Closed Wednesdays.

Ristorante Poggiomanente, at the Umbertide/Gubbio exit of E45, Umbertide. This restaurant in the cellar of a 15th century farmhouse, is large and popular with the local residents. It serves a variety of Umbrian specialties and offers pizzas in the evening. Open seven days a week. 075-941-3085

Lisciano Niccone

Ristorante da Gianna, Lisciano Niccone. Family-run restaurant with a wide selection of pastas, meats and a large pizza menu. Excellent food, friendly service. For Friday fish dishes call in advance. Tel: 075-844-358. Closed Mondays.

Niccone

Ristorante Nonna Gelsa, Niccone. Family-run trattoria featuring an extensive menu, consistently excellent food, friendly service, reasonably prices. 075-941-0699

La Chiusa, on SS416 east toward Niccone. An "organic" restaurant, using produce and meats grown on the property and wines and beers produced by small, specialty vintners and brewers from Italy and France. Unusual pasta dishes, fresh vegetables and roasted meats. Open from April 1 until October 8, every evening from 7 pm on, best to call for reservations, especially weekends. Ristorante Abbazia di Monte Corona, Voc. Montecorona. Old Abbey in a peaceful setting. Open for lunch from 12:30 until 2:30 and for dinner from 7:30 until 9:30. Closed Mondays. 075-941-1810

Preggio

La Castagna, Preggio, 13, v. del Forno. Specialties include truffles and funghi porcini, cooked in a variety of ways, polenta, risotto and mixed grilled meats. Family owned restaurant, service is personal and informal, but sometimes a bit slow. Call for reservations: 075-941-0294

Mercatale

Trattoria Mimmi, Mercatale, a multi-course fixed price menu for a very reasonable price, offering good local cooking. Bring your appetite! Open every day in the summer, serving lunch from 12:00 until 3:00, and dinner from 7:30 until 8:30. Closed on Wednesday in the winter. Rooms available above the restaurant. 0575-619-029.

Monte Santa Maria Tibertina

Ristorante Oscari, Monte Santa Maria Tibertina. A wonderful restaurant in an extraordinary hill town built around a castle, offering local dishes and grilled meats, a perfect way to spend a Sunday. Open year round.

Montone

Taverna del Verziere, Montone. Located in this extremely picturesque hilltop village, a short distance northeast of Umbertide, this restaurant offers typical Umbrian and Sardinian cooking in attractive rooms, or outside overlooking the valley. Serving dinner only from 6 until 10, or will serve lunch for a large group by special arrangement. Closed Mondays. Call for reservations: 075-930-6512.

Castel Rigone

Ristorante La Corte, Via Rigone, 1 - restaurant in the elegant four-star hotel Relais La Fattoria, indoor dining room is charming and the food excellent (award-winning chef) and the presentation beautiful. A dining experience. Expensive. Tel: 075-845-322 Open every day. Closed in January.

Locanda del Galluzzo, Treane, Castel Rigone. Part of an agriturismo - a beautiful place with a great view. Delicious food, pleasant atmosphere, a little more expensive. Tel: 075-845-352

Gubbio

Taverna del Lupo, Gubbio. In the old city of Gubbio and known for its truffle specialties, Taverna del Lupo is perfect for a special lunch or night out. Beautiful dining rooms (one with a Roman column), impeccable service and great truffles. A little more expensive than most. Tel: 075-927-4368
