Closed Sunday. This example menu shown below is from Osteria le Logge in Siena. The menu is handwritten and difficult to read. We took a picture of the menu and then cut out each section to display here. Steve provided translations of the dishes. This is the menu for a Saturday lunch, June 2000. Prices are in Lire and will have changed to the euro now, but it is still a good example menu. This menu is titled "Oggi Si Mangia" - Today one eats Appetizers (Antipasti) - small warm seafood salad with julienne vegetables - prosciutto from the Sienese Cinta breed of pig and melon - mixed little toast: porcini mushrooms, tomato and a word we can't read - thin slivers of marinated zucchini - small salad of organic white beans and "bottarga" (dried fish roe sac, of gray mullet, better more expensive, or tuna) - terrine of ricotta cheese with baby vegetables and extra virgin olive oil - herbed eggplant First Courses (Primi Piatti) - cold zucchini and octopus soup - spinach and ricotta cheese ravioli with turbot and swiss chard - house cheese and spinach gnocchi (misshapen kind) - handmade short thin pasta (pici) with Tuscan ragu (meat sauce) - fettuccine with porcini mushrooms - corkscrew pasta (fusilli) with raw tomato - risotto with small vegetables Second Courses (Secondi Piatti) - peach marinated sea bass with basil emulsion (sauce) - sea hen (a type of mullet fish) cooked in salt water - guinea hen in wine and thyme sauce with green string beans - grilled fresh porcini mushrooms - roasted herb-flavored lamb with potatoes - roast beef with tarragon and baked vegetables - thin beefsteak (usually rare) with arugula - large t-bone steak - prized Tuscan beef fillet (filetto di Chianina) with porcini mushrooms - salad consisting of tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, basil and olive oil (this is a main course salad) Side Dishes (Contorni) - roasted or baked mixed vegetables - roasted potatoes - tomatoes au gratin - organic white beans in oil - salad of pear, pecorino cheese, radish with apple dressing - mixed salad, green salad, tomato salad - Coperto 2000 lire - the cover charge (about $1.00). Desserts (Dolci) - lemon cake with strawberry sauce - plain dry cake (often with pine nuts) in vin santo (sweet dessert wine) custard - chocolate "millefeuille" - thickened cream dessert (like creme brulee or flan) with chocolate or strawberry - wild strawberries in warm cream - strawberries with lemon - fresh wild berries - lemon - vanilla ice cream (gelato) What did we have?
