Actually, this may be a good thing. Now you get to have some adventure. Walk over to Fondamenta Ormesini from the San Marcuola vaporetto or the Ghetto. There is a string of very inexpensive restaurants and bars along the small canal, all catering to locals and students. Look for the one with lots of people getting cichetti at the bar, and eating at little wood tables outside. Lots of scary-looking low tide stuff- just close your eyes, and eat. I think its just before the Sahara restaurant (which also was packed). In any case, this is an area to try for inexpensive, simple neighborhood food and drink.
