Best gelato in Tuscany, well deserved reputation, but no heaven for the lactose intolerant

This is rightfully one of the most famous gelaterie in Tuscany. I had to go there almost daily and had a variety of delicious gelati, the most memorable being a double cone of melone and amaretto; another, zabaglione. Unfortunately, if one is lactose intolerant, one should stay away from the only “lactose free” gelato served there, the soia con nuccioli. I encouraged my wife to take a serving of the soia con nuccioli after being assured by the server that it is “senza panna, senza latte, senza burro”. Regrettably, the effects of this gelato on my wife were most distressful and it took a few days for her body to get rid of the offensive toxins.

Otherwise, it is a great place, a pleasant setting and the variety of gelati and the quality are of the highest order.

GELATO: The best gelato of our trip.

This is always a big contest and in 40 days we found many good places. However, the very, very best was the gelateria in Castillina in Chianti. There is only one there and so you can’t go to the wrong place. It is a family place. They change some of their offerings from day to day. The flavors were very rich and full. One day there was mango which was outstanding.

Pauline's Note: Jane did not remember the name of this place, but Cristina from Siena knew it and writes, January 2003: "It is the most popular and supposedly the best Gelato in Castellina (it is good). Run by a husband and wife."
