Directions: The port of Maratea.

The old port of Maratea offers a lovely view of the sea, and of the neat rows of boats docked there, fresh sea air and several interesting-looking eating place. The port itself is below the town, on the road leading towards Sapri, on twisting roads that aren’t wonderfully marked. (You know you’ve missed the port if you get to the sign greeting you to Fumicello, which I think is spelled like the surname name of Annette, the former Mousketeer(ette?) and star of several entirely unmemorable teenybopper movies of the 1950s or 60s.

If you’re there in daylight, I’d recommend 1999, on the uphill part of the one-way road through the port area, because of its seaside terrace and for the chef’s creativity in some interesting mixes of seafood and local vegetables. High point of our meal there, though, was the apple crumb cake, rich in butter and, Sara insists, freshly baked on the spot each time it’s ordered. We usually skip the dolci, so I’m not sure why we ordered one as an ending to our light lunch. But was it ever worth the calories! (We didn’t have a full meal, which I imagine would run about 60-70 euro with house wine.)
