Directions: Sant'Anna is only 15 minutes from A21 exit Asto Ovest. Once you reach the village you will see signs to Cascina Vrona. Cascina Vrona is not a regular restaurant; it's mainly an agriturismo. This measn that most of the food you will be eating is not just cooked but also grown by the owners. Do not expect a fancy setting and prestigious silver cutlery; everything at Cascina Vrona is simple but solidly excellent. We were served a large selection of entrees, including a fried hot dough with homemade cured ham and an excellent and delicate pancetta, composta (a mix of vegetables served in a slightly sweet and sour tomato-based sauce), carne all'albese (raw meat, thinly sliced and served with oil, celery and thin slices of Parmigiano cheese), a delicate spinach flan with fonduta (hot cheese sauce) and slightly toasted polenta served with a mushroom and salsiccia ragout. These were followed by traditional "ravioli dal plin" served with butter and sage, a small serving of homemade tajarin (extremely thin egg tagliatelle) in a light tomato and meat sauce, wild boar, tripe in a tomato sauce and potatoes cut in pieces and roasted. The meal was finished with a quarter of roasted pear, perfect to clean the mouth for the following desserts: panna cotta and bonet (a Piedmontese chocolate baked pudding). The food was accompanied by three different and very good (despite not being too costly) local wines, starting with a lighter and simpler Barbera and ending with a more complex Nebbiolo. Unfortunately, no dessert wine. A full meal at Cascina Vrona costs €22 + drinks. The same agriturismo also offers comfortable lodging for 55 euros per double room, which includes breakfast.
