Creative, yet traditional cuisine of Romagna excellently prepared. Restaurant is in a town house on three floors. Stairs up to dining rooms.

Directions: In the center of Mondaino down on the right side of the main street off of the main piazza. Park outside the gate to the town.

We arrived at our vacation rental and our hosts, who lived up the valley, had graciously asked if they might make a reservation for us. When we asked them to do so, they made one at Al Pozzo Antico with the caveat that it was "expensive". We went with a little bit of apprehension, but when we looked at the prices, they didn't strike us as expensive at all. It wasn't extremely cheap, but our fantasy of an expensive meal was dashed! Welcome to Romagna/Marche. Later in the week we went back for a second meal - just as enjoyable.

First visit: Good mixed antipasto. lasagnette con coniglio was rich and good. Tortellacci con mentuccia e noci was delish. They have many secondi - steaks are a specialty. We split a dish that was three slices of filet with 3 different sauces. Dessert: chocolate fondue and Semifreddo di gianduia e zabaione, which was the only slight disappointment. 4 of us: antipasto, 4 primi, 3 secondi, 2 contorni, 2 dolci, house wine, water - €114.

On our second visit, we didn't have a reservation, and it was Friday evening, but they were able to seat us. The waiter led us upstairs to a table that was obviously in the "date room". As we walked in, three couples totally ceased their conversation, stared at us until we sat down, and then resumed -- it felt like we were in a sitcom. Food again was excellent. Ravioli stuffed with potato and mushroom, very large portion of lamb chops (6 rib chops), duck breast with caramelized apples and chestnuts - all very good. Delicious yogurt with frutti di bosca and chocolate panna cotta desserts -- IMO better choices than the semifreddo. Highly recommended.
