A great wine bar in a beautiful campo

Directions: In Campo San Giacomo da l'Orio 1503 - Sestiere Santa Croce, 10 minutes walk from the train station of Santa Lucia and 10 minutes from the Rialto bridge

I reviewed this place after my 2004 trip. In December 2006, it was just as good if not better. They’ve made a couple of improvements – they have a sign in the window now (making it easier to find), and they also have a menu, including one in English.

We went here several times during this trip. A few nights, it was too cold to sit in the campo, but being indoors was just as fun. It’s mainly locals who come here, and the ages ranged from kids to grandparents, with a few well-behaved dogs for good measure. One evening it was nice enough to sit outside . Campo San Giacomo da l’Orio is still my favorite campo in Venice, and there’s nothing better than sitting at Al Prosecco with some great wine and cheese and watching life in this campo.

The wine-by-the-glass selection is huge, and the food is excellent. I didn’t make it for oyster night this trip (it used to be Saturday, but I think it’s Wednesday now). One of the owners told me that they have started serving “Italian sushi” one night a week – I missed that too, but I’m intrigued. Next time. The cheese plates were awesome and included some kind of vegetarian salami made of figs and almonds – great stuff. And I love their mostarda (spicy fruit preserves). We also had some really good panini another night.

I was happy to see that the new edition of Michela Scibilia’s Venice Osterie restaurant guide listed Al Prosecco for “Best Cichetti in Venice” (along with La Cantina, All Arco, and Mondo di Vino). It’s a great place.
