Atmospheric osteria located in the medieval quarter of Ferrara

Antica Osteria delle Volte is on a cobbled street in the midst of medieval Ferrara. Via delle Volte takes its name from the "volte" or vaulted passageways that connect buildings on either side of the street. It is a cozy, stone-walled restaurant with rustic wooden tables and chairs. It was very lively the night we were there.

Our dinner for two: Wine was a 2001 Arte e Concerto Reggiano Lambrusco. Primi - I had pasta e fagioli. The pasta shape was "maltagliate" or miss-cut. Mark had a pasta stuffed with squash in a butter and sage sauce. Secondi - Mark had a specialty of Ferrara: Salama da sugo. This is a salami that is cured for about 1 year, then gently boiled for a number of hours. It is very tender this way. The salama was accompanied by very rich mashed potatoes, called "pure". The salami was very salty, but was perfect with a bite of the mashed potatoes as a foil. The Lambrusco also lightened up the overall effect. We both had mixed, green salads, followed by espresso and grappa.
