Our very favorite place for a first night is Arnaldo's in Rubiera - about 1 1/2 hours or so from Malpensa. Great restaurant, great rooms.

Directions: Near Modena. Just about 10 minutes from the Modena Nord exit on A-1.

Great rooms and a wonderful restaurant called Arnaldo's Clinica Gastronomica - one Michelin star. One of the nice features of the restaurant is that nearly everything is served from trolleys - with the exception of the pasta course. We still dine here a couple of times each year.

If you reserve a room here, make sure you also reserve in advance a table at dinner. The dining room is very large and we've never seen an empty table - never. Room and dinner for 2 under (the equivalent of) US$200 total.
