A taste of Sardinia in Milano. One of my favorite restaurants.
Directions: Take subway 3 (yellow) to Lodi station. Than start walking on Corso Lodi and go straight ahead for 400 meters. Turn right at Via Tagliamento and right again in via Don Bosco.
Far from the touristy areas of the city, Baja Sardinja is a restaurant that hosts mainly a crowd of hungry workers at lunch, while for dinner the place is usually packed with Milanese and Sardinian people looking for good fish and dishes piled high with pasta.
The restaurant is run by a family from Sardinia who offer the best fish and meat recipes of their island. Portions are large, VERY large.
My favorite dishes? Spaghetti con scampi e bottarga (spaghetti with shrimps and salted fish eggs), polpo alla catalana (octopus, tomato and onion salad), grigliata di pesce (mixed grilled fish, for two people), orata alla Vernaccia (fish cooked in a court bouillon with added Vernaccia di Oristano wine). Try also their grilled pecorino cheese. For dessert, try a traditional Seada (a pastry filled with young pecorino cheese and smeared with honey) or a dish of Sardinian cookies. As a less traditional alternative, Soufflè di mandorle (almond soufflè) and Selva nera (chocolate cake with chocolate covering) are great.
A group of at least 4 people can also book roasted suckling pig, but must do it one week in advance. You can also have a decent pizza, if you want, but I would rather have another of those Orata alla Vernaccia.
€20-25 will grant you a BIG dish of pasta, a BIG dish of fish, a BIG portion of dessert, wine, water, coffee and a glass of mirto. Since the restaurant is really tiny, you must book in advance (a couple days in advance is better). At night the kitchen is open until 1 am.
