Bancogiro has wonderful food at reasonable prices.

Directions: Close to the Rialto market, in the campo in front of the church of San Giacometto, next to an Internet cafe.

This may be my favorite restaurant in Venice, though there are still many left for me to try. I had 2 amazing lunches at Bancogiro in May 2004.

This restaurant has a downstairs wine bar with cichetti, outdoor tables right on the Grand Canal, and a small dining room upstairs with windows overlooking either the Canal or the Rialto market. I ate upstairs both times – I would have loved to eat outside but the first day, it was pouring rain and the second day, the tables were under water because of acqua alta.

The menu is small, handwritten and changes daily –there were several seafood choices but, because it was my first Spring in Italy, I was more interested in the vegetables. The first time I ate here, I started with a sauté of pumpkin and artichokes – sounds strange but it was truly one of the best things I have ever eaten! The artichokes were the tiny purple ones; it was a perfect dish. Then I had fresh fava beans with fried pecorino – delicious. I had never had favas before and I loved them – the cheese was drizzled with a tiny bit of honey and was so good. Those two dishes with water, bread and house white wine were around €20.

When I went back the second time, I wanted the pumpkin and artichokes again but they weren’t on the menu. This time I had a salad of paper-thin sliced raw artichoke with reggiano, the fava-pecorino dish again, and this amazing roasted raddichio. The radicchio arrived wrapped in paper and had been roasted with walnuts and some kind of cheese – just incredible. This meal (also with water and house white wine) was about €25. I think Bancogiro is a great bargain because the food is so exquisite and interesting.
