Trieste: Birreria Kofler

Riva Nazario Sauro 14

Reviewed by: rkorchid from NH, review #2722

When: 2007

A large, cavernous restaurant serving German style sausages and beer with an amazing menu of flatbreads and pizzas.

Directions: Facing the port just south of Piazza dell'Unita d'Italia.

The three of us stumbled on this restaurant while searching for something open on our last in Trieste. So we began and closed our week's stay with German style meals.

The Kofler is one of a small chain of restaurants. Two of us ordered a sausage plate with sauerkraut and potato salad. The other had a pasta of swordfish and eggplant and penne.

We much preferred the sauerkraut and potato salad to what we had earlier in the week at Kapuziner Keller.

Platters of flatbreads, pizzas, and calzone going by were just amazing. The calzone were as large as a forearm.

The restaurant was quiet when we arrived a little before 8 pm but it filled dramatically by 9 and 9:30.

With beers and grappa our bill was 60 euro for the three of us.
