Absolutely beautiful spot in a ruined castle in the hills near Spoleto. Amazing views of the valley from the outdoor terrace. Wonderful meal.

Directions: Off the A1 between Trevi and Spoleto. Take the exit for Campbello-sul-Clitunno (coming from the north) or Poreta (coming from the south) and then follow the signs to Poreta.

We had the most memorable meals of our 11 weeks in Italy at this beautiful spot in the hills between Trevi and Spoleto.

Il Castello di Poreta is located in the ruins of an old castle (at least 500 years old). There's a small inn with eight rooms and a restaurant, beautifully situated. Between the inn and the restaurant is a 16th century restored church, which is available for functions. The setting is so absolutely special, even the drive up into the hills of olive trees, passing through the old village of Poreta. I think the inn would also be a wonderful place to while away a few days in Umbria.

We ate here in early July and dined out on the terrace. The views across the valley are just spectacular. We could see our rental house on the hills to the north, above its own ruined castle. We also had a wonderful view of Spoleto. During the course of our meal, we watched the sun set over the valley. The description is hard for me to put into words!

Our family brought an American friend with us. We ordered four courses and two bottles of wine, and enjoyed a leisurely and very wonderful meal. I don't remember everything we ate, but I know we shared bruschetta. I had a homemade ravioli and then a wonderful beef. A couple of the dishes involved truffles. The desserts were very special. Now I wish I had taken detailed notes, and photos! Our 11-year old daughter was with us, and the staff was welcoming and helpful in meeting her needs. There was another table with children as well, so this is a good place for a family meal but would also be a very romantic place to dine!

Our friend picked up the tab, so I don't know how much our meal was (though I don't remember being shocked at the menu). And if you look at the prices on the website for the rooms and then for the half and full board, it is VERY reasonable for the uniqueness of the environment.

I notice that Diva also has the Castello di Poreta on her website. So consider that two recommendations for this very unique spot in the mountains of Umbria.
