Quiet lunch close to San Marco

Before leaving for Venice, I bought Michela Scibilia’s TapVenice Eating app for my iPhone. I looked in advance for restaurants near our hotel that she liked and that matched other favorable reviews that I had read. I didn’t really look in advance in other areas, but the app came in handy the day we visited St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace. The “Search Nearby” feature gave me options relatively close to St. Mark’s, but I focused on ones that would get us out of the piazza itself.

Cavatappi was close to St. Mark’s (230 meters) but far enough away that we escaped the crowds and the high prices. It is fairly small wine bar with only about six tables inside and three or four outside plus space at the bar. The menu isn’t huge, but everything we had was tasty. The four of us had four pasta dishes, a beer, and a liter of house wine for 60 euros. Service was pleasant and quick.

Small, contemporary style wine bar with good menu. We loved the salads and a couple of appetizers. Good chalk board list of wines by the glass.

We especially enjoyed the "torta cavatappi" which was a small layered casserole of vegetables, ham and cheese - baked and bubbling hot. This is a good place to know about when you are SO tired from San Marco crowds and just can't take another step - there it is!
