Excellent food with interesting twists, good wine list

Felicin in Monforte d’Alba; Highly Recommended **** A very nice garden leads into the restaurant with modern country décor. Nice wine list. Somewhat nouveau Italian style food in addition to traditional piemonte fare. We had the full menu. We started dinner with a selection of three appetizers. A baccala with a light basil sauce, pate with marsala and grilled vegetables in a pine nut sauce. All were very good and the grilled veggies were truly excellent. Then we both had very good raviolinetti del plin as secondo and excellent roast veal in Barolo for the main course. The veal main course had beautiful roasted potatoes, carrots and what looked and tasted like bok choy! We later asked the chef Nino about the apparent bok choy. Nino didn’t know what it was, because it was a vegetable that one his of his kitchen workers, who is Chinese, had planted in the garden, but he liked the taste and texture so he had cooked it. He went back into the kitchen and asked and found out that indeed this had been bok choy. He was surprised that we knew what it was, but since Joyce is ABC and grew up on the stuff it was easy for her. For dessert Joyce had a nice panna cotta and I had a unique and outstanding ice cream over hazelnut paste covered with a chocolate sauce. We washed things down with a bottle of ’99 Rivetti Pin.
