Stylish, welcoming restaurant/pizzeria in the main street of the città alta.

Very attractive interior in a nicely restored medieval building. There is eating on the ground floor and in the basement; also outside in summer (I didn’t see this area: I was there in February). A very interesting menu, but I’d eaten well at lunchtime, so just had a pizza. From a good range including some interesting toppings, some made with fior di latte (cows’ milk mozzarella) and others with bufala. I chose a bufala with crema di nduja. This is a speciality from Calabria: a paste of cured pork and hot peppers which, as a chili-head, I felt I had to try!

A free (or rather included in the €2.50 coperto) aperitivo of prosecco arrived, which gave me the opportunity to look around at my fellow diners. A nice mix of smart young things and three-generational families – the latter mostly eating pizzas. My pizza soon arrived: truly excellent. Yes, the nduja is hot, but you can also taste the bufala. Good tomato, good crust, a single leaf of basil: all very well executed. A glass of beer accompanied it all nicely.

The dessert menu looked interesting: a good range, all priced at €5.50. I chose a tortino ai 3 mousse di cioccolato. Beautifully presented, though, predictably, the white and milk chocolate mousses lacked the intensity of the dark. And finally, a good coffee. €21.

Excellent ristorante-pizzeria in the upper city

Directions: Near Piazza Vecchia

We found this great restaurant by chance while exploring the Citta Alta one Saturday evening. Although it has a trendy modern sign outside, the interior is very traditional, warm, and welcoming. We were lucky to get a table without a reservation, as within 10 minutes of sitting down the place filled with local Italians and the atmosphere was incredible. There is a choice of a pizza menu or a la carte. The food is excellent, and they offer a wine list.
