Our Only Disappointing Meal in Umbria

We had a disappointing meal and experience in this lovely restaurant in Bevagna.

I cannot remember exactly what we ordered but I do remember the following:

a) portions were much much smaller than at any other restaurant

b) the "salad" that we received (and I use the term very loosely) consisted (I kid you not) of probably three lettuce leaves which were cut up very fine, nothing else in terms of vegetables, a bit of dressing. And for this we were charged 4 euros EACH. This was a mockery.

c) when the waiter opened our wine bottle and gave it to me to taste, I indicated that it seemed sour and may not be a good bottle. Instead of immediately offering to bring a different bottle, or maybe tasting it himself, he proceeded to argue with me that it MUST be good and maybe I am just not used to this "type" of wine. What??? I was taken aback by this. When my husband tasted the wine after this, he indicated that it was OK. We did end up drinking the wine and it was decent.

Maybe indeed I should have waited a bit and tried it several seconds later again. But I have never had this type of experience before. I have probably only once before also made this type of indication, i.e. that I was not entirely pleased with the wine, so it is NOT something I do as a rule. But why would you offer a taste before pouring to other guests if not to be able to voice your opinion, be it good or bad? This immediately brought down the restaurant in my opinion.

We did not return any other night of our stay in Bevagna and I would not recommend it to others.

Wonderful food, beautiful restaurant and great variety.

Bevagna is a small and really quiet town. We were one of only 3 tables that night. The food was wonderful, service great and worth the vist to Bevagna. One person ordered the chocolate molten cake and did everything except lick the plate! With 2 bottles of wine the bill came to €175 for 4.

A great way to spend a last evening in Umbria!

This dinner was suberb! It sits in a very small piazza not far from the main piazza in Bevagna. The restuarant itself has great ambience being an enoteca, so we were surrounded by hundreds of bottles of wine to catch our eyes. The smell of the woodburning fireplace from the kitchen was divine, and all of our meals were heavenly, together with a great bottle of wine this was the perfect end to an Umbrian vacation!
