Montone: Erba Luna Ristorante

Better than ever!

For the past several years, Erba Luna had been a very popular bar/restaurant in the heart of Montone until last year when the delightful owners (Claudio from Rome and Martine from France) lost their lease.

Apparently the commune then offered them a literal hole in the wall which wraps around this pretty medieval town and in partnership with a fearless ex-pat couple from New York (one of whom was already a professional cook) they somehow constructed a very handsome, even more charming 'new' Erba Luna. We ate there twice in late August this year and immediately enjoyed the fact that the path to the restaurant was lined by lighted candles, and likewise the entire physical plant has an artistic touch. There are also a few outdoor tables with lovely view.

But what was most noticeable to my wife and me was the all around improvement in what had already been a darn good restaurant. The menu changes with the season and the cooks use many ingredients picked from their garden that very day and the freshness of the food is distinctive.

Judith, the ex-pat cook from New York, made several fresh breads, each better than the one before - I'd say easily the best bread I've had anywhere in Italy. All pastas are hand made with local ingredients and my wife and I fought over the spinach ravioli with ricotta (the second time we ate there we were wise enough to get 2 orders of this appetizer). Claudio's pistachio covered lamb chops were delicious, the desserts excellent and the wine list was more interesting than before though very reasonably priced (excellent wine by the glass was also available). Service by Jeff was very personable and very helpful.

In sum, this new restaurant served us really delicious food in a friendly and pretty atmosphere. Dinner for 2 without wine averaged about 55 euros.
