Hearty lunch for hungry hikers on Isola Polvese in Lake Trasimeno.

Directions: From the dock walk uphill to the left, past the aquatic garden and uphill from the fort.

We visited Isola Polvese, a short boat ride from San Felliciano on Lake Trasimeno on a cloudy and windy Monday. The island is a natural park run by the province of Perugia and used for environmental education. Near the dock is a restaurant, closed on Mondays, a bar with sandwiches and a small shop that sells local products.

I had read about the Fattoria online and was pleased to see that it was open when we stumbled across it on our hike around this pleasant green island. The large dining room was echoing with the the animated conversations of many excited school children. We famished hikers were seated by ourselves on a peaceful and sheltered outdoor terrace. A huge bowl of ziti type pasta dressed with a delicious light tomato sauce and sprinkled heavily with shredded pecorino was set in front of us, along with a liter of good rosso di tavola and mineral water. Next a platter of sliced roast pork drizzled with a fennel puree and surrounded by roast potatoes was delivered to our table. Caffe finished this very abundant meal. I'm sure this was the lunch of the day, cooked in quantity for all the guests, but it was good and satisfying. Cost for the 3 of us was €40.

We did not take the time to investigate the rooms or rentals because the rain had started and we wanted to return to the boat. However, this place appears to have the potential for a laid back retreat if one knows a bit of Italian and doesn't mind school groups.
