A delightful family run restaurant.

Directions: In the castle area of Peschici, ask locally as it is not on the main street.

This has been our most interesting experience in Peschici, in the Gargano area, Northern Puglia. "Galleria del ristoro" is a small restaurant run by Santina and her husband Romano.

Santina had been a retired teacher for many years when she decided to restore the ancient basement of her house, which is part of the old fortification of the village. The restaurant is decorated with some very beautiful works of art of a friend of the family, Gerardo Gerardi. The general feeling however, is like to go for dinner at your grandma house. Lovely linen tablecloths are used on ordinary plastic tables together with designer cutlery and paper napkins still in their supermarket package.

Santina is soft spoken but decisive and will eventually convince you to eat the best she has on offer for the evening. And she is right, this is no boring grandma cooking. We had marinated row shrimps, a real delicacy, unknown to me and not far form the very fashionable sushi, absolutely incredible organically grown tomatoes, and “as fresh as it gets” grilled fish.

Everything is so incredibly simple. There are no twirls and decorations on the food, not even a leaf of parsley, but the taste is so pure, almost primeval. Every night there is freshly made homemade dessert, like mascarpone with amaretti and cinnamon or an orange tart.

To finish a complimentary glass of homemade moscato and a nice long chat with the owners, which is as good and original and true as the food. Not to be missed.
