Fiesole: GELATO: Gelateria il Tucano

An unsung stop for gelato, in the popular town of Fiesole.

Directions: On the main street - about 1/2 way up the hill from the bus stop. On your right as you head uphill. Watch for the sign with the colorful toucan.

Steve and I did "research" on gelato in both Rome and Florence, using a specialty guidebook to locate well known gelaterias. We went to most of the gelaterias touted, and we certainly enjoyed our hands-on research. There were many winners.

We stayed in Fiesole, above Florence, for four days, at La Cannelle B & B. On our way up the hill, we passed the gelateria Tucano. A colorful toucan adorns the sign. We had to try it, and this obscure and unsung gelateria was just great. Most interesting to me was the uniquely salty and authentic pistachio - it tasted just like a mouthful of salted pistachio nuts. Maybe not for everyone, but I loved it.

The owner makes the gelato and he was doing a good business while we were there. We liked it as well as any of the more famous places! Anyone interested in more of our thorough "research" just send us a PM! Linda
