For a simple meal that won't break the bank, Leo Gusto is a good choice.

Directions: Near the Bargello

When we discovered that our first choice restaurant was closed that day, we took a chance on Gusto Leo, located very near the Bargello museum. We were looking for a budget restaurant with decent food, but when you're in a touristy city like Florence it's hard to know!

Leo Gusto had a nice menu and fair prices. We each ordered a pizza for about the same price we pay at our local pizzeria in Umbria. Although the pizzas might have been just a bit smaller they were still more than enough for us, and tasted good to boot. I was impressed with the generous amounts of ingredients on each pizza.

No reason to go to this restaurant in Florence.

I don't know why we didn't listen to our instincts on this one. The owner was yelling at passerbys that "he had the best food in Florence." Menus in at least 3 languages, TV blaring in the bar-like interior. We were walking away but then we made the mistake of listening to the couple who just walked out saying they had eaten there 3 times and it was great. They said we wouldn't be sorry....but we were. The pizza was bad, the wine was bad, the atmosphere was bad. Bad. Bad. Bad. We knew better or should have anyway. If a restaurant is good the owner doesn't have to stand on the sidewalk and pull people in off the street.
