Sciacca Terme: Hostaria del Vicolo

Vicolo Sammaritano 10 , Phone: 0825.23071

Excellent specialties at reasonable prices.

Directions: Down a small, dark alleyway that runs between this city's two main streets. Look for sign hanging out into the street.

They say that in Sicily you eat amazingly well, but we didn't have much luck finding great food at decent prices. This "slow food" member restaurant was one nice exception.

The restaurant consists of a tiny, dark room (about 8 tables) decorated simply but welcomingly. The menu was not extensive, but had fish, vegetable and meat choices to suit all tastes. The owner was friendly and knowlegeable, and most importantly he was extremely accommodating of my food allergies, coming up with an excellent meal that wasn't at all on the menu.

My husband had a fish primo and secondo, while I had a vegetarian primo. For dessert we tasted the local specialty (I've forgotten the name), but it was a strange almond paste pancake filled with cheese or something, and not at all light, but definitely interesting. With wine and water we paid no more than 20 per person.

It's worth a night spent in the tiny town of Sciacca Terme, not too far from Agrigento, to eat at this restaurant. You can stay for 100 at the 1950's Hotel delle Terme, with enormous rooms and a totally retro feel. It would be possible to stay here rather than Agrigento -- see the Greek temples during the day, drive here to sleep. It costs less and is 700% more charming.
