Down-home Abruzzese cuisine!

This is the kind of restaurant that is not for the timid traveler. It is the kind of place that fills with regulars, so when the stranieri enter through the squeaky door, every head turns to size them up.

Once we settled into our table, we felt more comfortable, as we were plied with the house Montepulciano d’Abruzzo (1/2 liter costs only about €2) and invited to the antipasto buffet, which had a range of Abruzzese starters, including fresh-made cheese, hard-boiled eggs drizzled with fruity oil, mini-frittatas, and fried zucchini. A basket of piping-hot frittelle were brought to the table, and we nearly swooned as they reminded us of sopaipillas from New Mexico (and we were fully tempted to ask for a jar of honey and just complete the meal with that). The oral menu for the primi was recited and we had 5 options to choose from, the menu changing daily and the offerings depending on the season and what is fresh. This drill was repeated once we have downed the pasta, but we didn’t have room for a secondo nor the dessert, coffee, or digestive.

Service is friendly and efficient and the food is that down-home kind of Abruzzo fare the region is famous for…hearty, fresh, and tasty. The prices are very low and all the pastas are made fresh in-house daily. One of the waiters spoke some English.
